Worcester Bosch 227 Fault Code: No flame detected

The numeric-display equivalent of an ignition fault — the boiler cannot detect a flame.

Most common on: Greenstar 2000 / 4000 / 8000

What the 227 code means

227 is shown on newer Greenstar models with a numeric display and means the boiler has failed to detect a flame during ignition. It is the direct equivalent of the older EA letter code.

As with EA, it is a deliberate safety lockout. The boiler will not keep the gas valve open when it cannot confirm the burner has lit.

Common causes

  • Interrupted gas supply or low gas pressure
  • Faulty flame-sensing electrode or ignition leads
  • Blocked or frozen condensate pipe
  • Gas valve or PCB fault

What to check

  1. 1

    Confirm the gas supply

Check other gas appliances light, the boiler gas cock is open and any prepayment meter has credit.

  2. 2

Check for a frozen condensate pipe

In freezing weather, thaw the external condensate pipe if it is blocked with ice, then reset.

  3. 3

    Reset once

Hold the reset button. If 227 returns, do not keep resetting — book a Gas Safe engineer.

Work on the gas side of a boiler must be carried out by a Gas Safe registered engineer. The checks above are limited to safe, non-invasive things a homeowner can look at (pressure, resets, the gas supply) — if in doubt, stop and call an engineer.

Frequently asked questions

What does the Worcester Bosch 227 fault code mean?

The numeric-display equivalent of an ignition fault — the boiler cannot detect a flame. 227 is shown on newer Greenstar models with a numeric display and means the boiler has failed to detect a flame during ignition. It is the direct equivalent of the older EA letter code.

Can I fix a Worcester Bosch 227 error myself?

You can try a single reset and the safe checks below, but Worcester Bosch 227 usually needs a Gas Safe registered engineer. Never work on the gas side of a boiler yourself — it is illegal and dangerous unless you are Gas Safe registered.

Why does my Worcester Bosch boiler keep showing 227?

A recurring 227 means the underlying cause has not been fixed — most often interrupted gas supply or low gas pressure. Resetting repeatedly will not solve it; get the boiler diagnosed properly.
