What the regulations are for

At their heart the regulations are about protecting everyone else's water. If your installation lets dirty water flow back into the main — through a submerged hose, a poorly protected bidet, or a cross-connection — it can contaminate the supply to a whole street. The rules also target waste (dripping overflows, leaking fittings) and undue consumption.

Fluid categories 1 to 5

The regulations grade water by contamination risk into five fluid categories. Category 1 is wholesome water straight from the main. Category 2 is a slight change — temperature or taste, such as water that has passed through a combi. Category 3 is a slight health hazard, like water in a central heating system without additives or a domestic basin.

Category 4 is a significant health hazard — heating systems with chemical additives, for instance. Category 5 is a serious health hazard involving human waste or pathogens, such as a WC, a bidet with a spray, or an industrial process. The category of the water on the outlet side dictates how strong the backflow protection must be.

Backflow prevention

Backflow protection stops water flowing the wrong way — back towards the main — when pressure drops. The device you choose must suit the highest fluid category it protects against. A simple air gap or single check valve suits low categories; higher categories need double check valves, RPZ valves, or a physical Type AA/AB air gap.

The classic trap is the tap-connected hose or a shower spray that can reach into a WC or basin — a category 5 risk needing a physical air gap, not just a check valve. Getting the device wrong is one of the most common regulation breaches, so match the protection to the risk every time.
