Hot Water Cylinder Commissioning Certificate (Benchmark)

The Benchmark checklist is the industry-standard commissioning and service record for hot water storage cylinders, published under the Heating and Hotwater Industry Council scheme. Completing it confirms the cylinder was installed and commissioned to the manufacturer's instructions.

A completed Benchmark record is usually required to validate the manufacturer's warranty. If it is missing or incomplete, a future warranty claim can be refused, so accurate commissioning records matter to both the installer and the customer.

TradePlanr digitises the Benchmark cylinder checklist so you can complete every field on site, capture signatures and produce a PDF that satisfies the warranty requirement without handling a paper logbook.

What it covers

  • Property and customer details plus cylinder make, model and serial number
  • Confirmation the installation followed the manufacturer's instructions
  • Hot water storage temperature and thermostat settings
  • Expansion vessel and safety device checks where fitted
  • Flow rates and system performance at commissioning
  • Confirmation the customer received user instructions and a demonstration
  • Installer details and dated customer and installer signatures

When it's required

A Benchmark cylinder record should be completed whenever a new hot water cylinder is installed and commissioned. Most manufacturers make a completed checklist a condition of the product warranty.

It is also completed at each service so the record shows the cylinder has been maintained. A continuous service history helps protect the warranty across the life of the cylinder.

The completed record stays with the customer, typically alongside the appliance documentation, and may be requested during a warranty claim or a property sale.

Frequently asked questions

Why do I need to complete a Benchmark checklist?

The Benchmark record is the standard commissioning and service log for cylinders. Manufacturers usually require a completed checklist to validate the warranty, so it protects both you and your customer.

Does a missing Benchmark record affect the warranty?

It can. If the commissioning or service record is missing or incomplete, a manufacturer may decline a warranty claim, which is why keeping the Benchmark record accurate and safe is important.

Is Benchmark the same as a G3 certificate?

No. Benchmark validates the manufacturer's warranty, while a G3 commissioning certificate relates to Building Regulations compliance for unvented systems. An unvented cylinder installation often needs both.

Can I complete the Benchmark record on site?

Yes. TradePlanr lets you complete the full checklist, capture both signatures and produce the PDF at the property, so nothing has to be finished back at the office.
